Overlap is a mileage anomaly which happens when the value of algebraic difference between adjacent kilometre posts is higher than actual distance between them. This occurs when re-alignment made new track shorter.

Compressed kilometre is a kilometre which length is less than 1000 metres. This can be done to compensate for shorter track.

Gap is a mileage anomaly which happens when the value of algebraic difference between adjacent kilometre posts is lower than actual distance between them. This occurs when re-alignment made new track longer.

Stretched kilometre is a kilometre which length is less than 1000 metres. This can be done to compensate for longer track.
